Module 4 Unit 1, Activity 3: Establishing a Positive Classroom Climate

It’s so important to create a climate of caring and openness in the classroom by developing that positive climate in the classroom.

Attention to school climate is a great way to show support to your students well-being socially and emotionally. By observing the school climate and see what you’re working with you’re able to identify how you can best serve the students around you. Every school is going to be different so just learning how to adapt to that school climate will do wonders in your performance.

Students, especially high school, are going to go through some difficult and tough situations in their life. Sometimes it may even come from harsh bullying from other students. When we as teachers show the students that we want to help with these issues and tackle the problem in an effective and safe way we show major support that maybe these students are receiving from no where else.

When students in the classroom are coming from a different cultural background that is different than your own it’s important to learn about their cultural background as well. Getting to know your students is a vital key to successful relationships with the students. So for example I want to teach in Hawaii and there are many different cultures that are present in the classroom. Coming from Japanese-Filipino background I won’t be able to understand everything about the Samoan or Polynesian culture entirely. In order for me to educate myself I can do some research or just have some casual conversations with the students ont heir culture as well. By taking the time to learn about them they will want to know about you as well and create that positive relationship in the classroom.

Multicultural Methods and Application in Teaching

How lessons in your subject field can reflect the diversity of your community, region, country, or world. My subject field is physical/general science. In this subject I can incorporate diversity of my community, region and country by addressing the different cultures in projects or material that we are reading. In physical science we talk about different regions of the world such as in the topic of geology. In a lesson that studies rocks I can show the students that the society of the United States is not only founded on it's own but relies on that of other regions of the earth. For example, students will learn that things we use in our everyday lives come from resources that  are created, produced, and molded in  other areas of the world.  A rationale for why it is important to introduce students to multicultural content and multiple perspectives. It is important to introduce students to multicultural content and multiple perspectives in order to prepare studen...

Reflection: Backwards Mapping and Standards

It's very important to understand the standards and apply them while teaching. The standards gives teachers a basis of what the students need to know. Without the standards it would be difficult to pinpoint what skills and knowledge are being taught. In this blog I am going to write a reflection on backwards mapping and standards. Backwards Mapping Reflection Backwards mapping was an effective way to make up the lesson plan. It helped tremendously because when you work off evaluating the end goal or what we call the standard, it ensures that the plans and procedures that you are outlining in your lesson plan will make sure that the goal is met. The first step in the backwards mapping strategy is to evaluate the standard and end goal and ensure that you understand all that is required for the student to learn. This can be done by breaking down the standard as well by evaluating what the big ideas or nouns are versus what skills or verbs that the students must know and be able...

Differentiating for and Anticipating Student Needs

Lesson plan: Newton's Second Law of Motion (Force=Mass x Acceleration) Student Group: High School Physical Science Differentiated instruction: Students Targeted : Being able to teach to a diverse group of students is important to the success of any classroom. This blog is going to be dedicated to the student who is either  disengaged or struggling.  The lesson that I will be teaching needs to have diverse learning and teaching strategies that can aid in engaging students who are not interested, having trouble staying awake, not doing their homework or participating in class, or struggling to understand and grasp the content. For a student who is disengaged they may be dealing with personal issues at home or are just not interested in the topic. It is up to teachers to try and engage and motivate the student as much as possible. For a student who is struggling with the content it is very important to gauge the classroom as a whole. For example if you are noticing ...
